Car-window shootings hit 3 cities

Police seeking tips to halt streak of vandalism

PLEASANT GROVE — A string of recent car window shootings with air rifles has three different police departments increasing patrols and offering rewards to prevent further damage.

Over the past few weeks, nearly 125 car windows were shot out in Pleasant Grove, and Lindon. American Fork Police reported more than 20 windows damaged over the weekend.

Orem police said four air rifle shootings occurred Saturday evening in that city, including one involving a house.

"Somebody knows who did this, and word will get out," said Pleasant Grove Police Capt. Cody Cullimore.

Cullimore said he thinks young adults or teenagers are responsible. Because shootings can't be traced using means like fingerprints, police are relying on tips from the public.

Police suggest car owners park in driveways and not on the street.

Even though some of the shootings date back about a month, most have occurred within the past week. Most car windows were shot out at night from late evening to early morning. Though the group has tended to prey on cars, a few homes have also been hit.

Cullimore estimates the damage ranges from $35,000 to $40,000.

Police departments in Pleasant Grove and American Fork teamed with Jones Paint & Glass to offer a $300 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

"Maybe someone can help," said Gary Jones, a manager for Jones Paint & Glass.

With different window types, Jones said window replacement costs can range anywhere from $200 to more than $1,000.

Even though police said they think a single group is responsible for a majority of the damage, Cullimore said he thinks a few of the shootings have resulted from copycat groups.

"Someone gets a bright idea and does some damage," said Orem Police Lt. Doug Edwards.

Edwards said the department is still collecting information about the incidents.
