CEDAR CITY Former Iron County Sheriff David "Dude" Benson finally received a trial date on Friday, more than three months after he pleaded not guilty to eight felony counts involving theft and misuse of public funds.
A six-day jury trial is scheduled to begin July 9 in 5th District Court.
State attorneys had asked for a change of venue, arguing it would be difficult to find an unbiased jury in the popular sheriff's hometown. Judge G. Rand Beacham denied the motion and both sides are preparing for the case to be held in a Cedar City courtroom.
Benson, 38, is charged with six felonies and three misdemeanor counts that include theft, misuse of public funds, witness tampering or destroying public records, and obstruction of justice.
Benson has been on paid administrative leave since July 2003.
