HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Connecticut lawmakers took the first step Wednesday toward the possible impeachment of Gov. John G. Rowland, announcing they would form a bipartisan committee to investigate his conduct.
Several lawmakers called it a "sad day" for the state, which has been enveloped by the fast-moving scandal for more than a month. No governor in Connecticut history has been impeached.
Rowland has come under fire for accepting gifts and free work on his vacation cottage from politically connected friends, state employees and a state contractor, and for lying about it. He has said he never returned the favors, and he has apologized repeatedly for lying about the renovations.
