The Paradigm Trio will perform Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 203 E. 200 South. The concert will benefit Camp Kostopulos, which offers recreational opportunities for people of all ages with disabilities. The suggested donation is $7.

The Paradigm Trio consists of local musicians Kelly Parkinson, violin, Joel Rosenberg, viola, and Jed Moss, piano. The group is part of the Utah Arts Council Performing Arts Tour for the 2003-04 season. This is the second time the trio has been part of the tour.

For next week's concerts the ensemble will play Mendelssohn's Trio No. 1 in D minor, op. 49, and Schubert's Trio in B flat major, op. 99. Both have been transcribed for viola by Kelly Richardson, violinist with the Orchestra of Sandy City. This is a repeat performance of a concert the ensemble gave in November.

"The Schubert trio wasn't published until after his death," Rosenberg said, adding that the work was relatively unknown during the composer's lifetime. "That was a shame, because Schubert wrote such wonderful melodies, and this trio is so beautiful."

Rosenberg said that the two trios are among the most significant works written for the piano-trio medium. "They occupy a place of real distinction in the literature."

Rosenberg admitted that both works are demanding. "It's challenging to play these trios, but it's also rewarding and fun."
