Salt Lake police used a "flash-bang" and a less-than-lethal bullet to end a standoff at an apartment Tuesday afternoon.
About 2:30 p.m., officials with Valley Mental Health went to an apartment near 1350 South and 140 East to check on two clients. One of the men swung a knife taped to a hammer at the officials. They called police, Salt Lake Police Lt. Sandra Urry said.
Police brought negotiators to the scene, but the men refused to talk. Police used a device that flashes a bright light and bangs loudly to disorient the men, then shot the less-than-lethal 40 mm bullet at one of the men, bruising him, Urry said.
The two men inside the apartment, 44- and 46-year-old brothers, were booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of the incident, Urry said.
