2003's list of those who were killed with alleged criminal intent:

1. ESCALANTE, Jan. 26 — Garfield County sheriff's deputy David Jones was shot and killed after pulling over two people suspected of drinking and driving on a rural dirt road. Earl Leston Barnes, 53, pleaded guilty in June to aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. William Byron Allred, 51, the driver, pleaded guilty in September to aggravated robbery and was sentenced to five years to life in prison.

2, 3. SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 3 — Jose R. Talacon, 21, and Jaime Nunez-Guiterrez, 31, were found shot near 1200 East and 200 South about 1:30 a.m. after police were called to a traffic accident. Talacon was lying on the street and Nunez-Guiterrez was still inside a vehicle, which had rolled into a parked car. Both victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition before succumbing to their injuries on Feb. 4. A newspaper carrier later found the body of James Gary Vigil near where the other two bodies were discovered. Investigators determined Vigil shot Talacon and Nunez-Guiterrez before taking his own life. Investigators believe the men got into an argument with each other while trying to purchase drugs.

4. WEST VALLEY CITY. Feb. 14 — Bojan Mamuzic, 17, was shot and killed at a Chevron gas station near 3200 West and 3500 South after two rival Asian gangs with a long history of violence had a chance meeting. David Moukdahan, 21, is believed to have shot Mamuzic and another man who was seriously injured. Moukdahan committed suicide in a Sandy apartment several hours later.

5, 6. WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 21 — LaRae Marara Sullivan, 34, and her 4-year-old daughter, Kehaulani Nui Sullivan, were stabbed to death inside their residence near 3300 South 6700 West. Sullivan's husband, Brian Christopher Sullivan, 38, was arrested at Valley Mental Health in Murray after a relative who had spoken with him called police. Brian Sullivan was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of criminal homicide. In September, a judge found Sullivan competent to stand trial. He is scheduled to be back in court Jan. 26.

7. MAGNA, Feb. 22 — Mary Ann Martinez, 51, was shot to death by her boyfriend, Uriel Treto-Luna, 58, outside her residence near 2900 South and 8400 West. After shooting Martinez, Treto-Luna dragged her body to the back yard and committed suicide. Martinez had called police about 2:30 a.m. Deputies arrived just as Martinez and Treto-Luna were struggling for a handgun in the carport. During the struggle Treto-Luna shot Martinez.
