Bob Detweiler explained the difficulty of synchronizing the oar strokes of eight men in competitive rowing for a documentary about the Great Eight narrated by Gregory Peck:

"If you could line up eight golfers and get them to coordinate their swings so they'd all swing together, all hit the ball together and all finish together and to be able to do that 32 times a minute, you'd have some idea of the kind of coordination it requires to get eight guys to do exactly the same thing at exactly the same time."
