Want to help those in need? Many opportunities available

There are countless opportunities to volunteer in the community. No special skills are necessary other than a desire to help others. Adult Probation and Parole: Reception, office and clerical work needed. Also need a GED instructor, life skills teacher or help with volunteer coordination. Must be 18 or older and pass a criminal background check.

American Red Cross: Help low-income senior citizens or the disabled apply for utilities assistance.

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Mentor child or teen in need. One hour per week, flexible.

The Christmas Box House: Volunteer receptionist needed, full or part time, during the holidays to help with light clerical and reception duties, as well as tracking down donations.

Cornerstone Counseling Center: Computer literate person needed for office assistance. Three to five hours per week during the day. Background check required.

Girl Scouts of Utah: Help with special events, Super Saturday workshops, badge workshops and working with girls in troop settings.

Horizonte: Teach English to immigrants, tutor algebra or help Spanish speakers obtain their GED. Also need help in on-site day-care.

Kid's Cafe — Utah Food Bank: Prepare, serve and clean up meals for at-risk children Monday through Friday, two- to three-hour shifts.

Medically Underserved in Utah: Americorps and AMUU are looking to recruit a full-time volunteer to help underserved populations access health-care providers in Utah. A living stipend is provided along with health insurance, paid training and a post-service education award.

Mountainlands Comm. Housing Trust: Assist with construction of low-income housing in Park City. This program helps families purchase a home through "sweat equity."

National Tongan American Society: Donations of furniture and accessories needed to help a low-income family.

No More Homeless Pets: The following donations are needed: pet food, brushes, animal carriers, paper towels, cat beds, chew bones, Polaroid film and carpet samples.

Salt Lake County Aging Services: Donation of treadmill or exercise bike in good condition needed; also need a physical therapist or physical therapist student to volunteer one hour a week to work with seniors.
