Thank you for Doug Robinson's inspiring column about the tireless efforts of Michael McLean to transform a simple story of Christmas into what has indeed become a holiday classic. Long after Al Henderson and I had moved on to other projects and ventures, Mike "kept a light burning" until the story found a voice in the forms of screenwriter Ernie Wallengren and actor Jimmy Stewart.
I do wish to clarify, however, that the original story was written by Michael McLean, Allan Henderson and (J.) Scott Iverson, rather than as a solo effort by McLean as the column implied. Inasmuch as neither Al (to the best of my knowledge) nor I took a penny for the effort, it only seems fair to set the record straight on a film that may well wind up being the pinnacle of my writing career.
