Alliance fosters disunity

While announcing that the Alliance for Unity will be taking stands on social issues, Elder Alexander Morrison stated that the group will not become involved in partisan politics.

Their stands may or may not be "partisan," but given the history and philosophy of Morrison and those involved with the alliance, they most certainly will be liberal.

While it may be true that the LDS Church has not taken a stand on the disposal of nuclear waste (the answer to that question depends on whether you read the Deseret News or Salt Lake Tribune), it is also true that the church has been quite specific that members who disagree with general authorities in public forums are subject to church discipline.

Elder Morrison has used his platform as a general authority to forward a personal political agenda. Active members of the church who see flaws in his arguments, however, will think twice before responding in letters to the editor or other public forums. The effect will be to dampen debate on this and other issues the Alliance for Unity chooses to support.
