The New York Mets Sunday will place ace pitcher Dwight Gooden on the 15-day disabled list, the club announced Saturday night.
Gooden, who has never been disabled in his six-year career, experienced soreness underneath his right armpit while pitching in Saturday afternoon's 6-2 loss to the Reds.Gooden was relieved after giving up a home run to Kal Daniels in the third inning.
Left-hander Dave West will assume Gooden's place in the rotation, although it is expected Gooden will miss only one scheduled start.
The Mets will recall right-hander Kevin Tapani (7-3 at Tidewater) to take Gooden's spot on the roster. Tapani was one of three pitchers, along with Wally Whitehurst and Jack Savage, acquired in a three-way trade with Oakland and Los Angeles that sent Jesse Orosco to the Dodgers in December 1987.
