ICON Health & Fitness Inc., the Logan company founded in 1977 by two men while they were attending Utah State University, was named Entrepreneur of the Year Thursday by the MountainWest Venture Group.
The award was made to Scott R. Watterson and Gary E. Stevenson, co-founders, during a joint luncheon at the Red Lion Hotel with the Utah Venture Capital Conference, by David Angerbauer, MountainWest president.ICON claims to be the largest manufacturer of home exercise equipment in the world with sales of $800 million. Their brand names include Weslo, ProForm, Weider, Image, Legend, JumpKing and HealthRider.
The company has received numerous awards from retailers and suppliers including Sears Roebuck & Co. and Wal-Mart. It also was the first fitness equipment manufacturer to achieve registration of its corporate quality systems from the International Organization for Standardization.
ICON is the largest private employer in Cache Valley and Watterson and Stevenson are active in the community. Both graduated from USU in 1979, received numerous awards and both served missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
