A former IRS agent and Salt Lake tax attorney was bound over to stand trial in 4th District Court on a charge of theft of more than $350,000 from two Mapleton ranchers.

Craig P. Orrock, 49, now practicing law in Las Vegas, will be arraigned March 14 on the second-degree felony. Following testimony in a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Judge Boyd L. Park found probable cause that Orrock committed the crime.According to a court affidavit, investigators say that in 1990 Orrock persuaded John and Richard Childs to place more than $1 million in his care. The money was from the sale of cattle and land and was supposed to be deposited into trust accounts.

In 1993, the Childses discovered that Orrock had allegedly withdrawn money from the accounts without notifying them, court documents say. When the Childses attempted to contact Orrock they discovered he had closed his Salt Lake office and moved to Nevada a few months earlier. Through the assistance of an attorney, the Childses were able to recover about $400,000 from Orrock by threatening legal action, the affidavit says.

The Childses also paid for an audit, which indicated that Orrock had used about $350,000 of their money for personal reasons. Investigators say that an attorney for Orrock sent a letter to the Childses' attorney acknowledging that Orrock owes them nearly $400,000.

Orrock is currently free on $50,000 bail.
