Fast facts

Some of the top offensive performances in both schools' history have come in this rivalry. In 1977, BYU quarterback Marc Wilson threw for 571 yards against Utah, the fifth-best performance in BYU history. In 1993, Utah quarterback Mike McCoy threw for 434 yards against BYU, ninth best in school history. In 1983, Steve Young threw for six touchdowns against the Utes. In 1981, Gordon Hudson had 259 receiving yards against Utah, the second most for a single game in school history. Utah's longest-ever run from scrimmage came against BYU in 1947, when Frank Nelson ran 93 yards. Ute kick returner Erroll Tucker returned a kickoff the length of the field for a touchdown against BYU in 1985. Chris Yergensen's 55-yard field goal to beat BYU in 1993 is tied for the second longest in school history.

Flashback

2001: BYU 24, Utah 21: For 3 1/2 quarters, Utah seemed poised to spoil everything. That included BYU's 10-0 record, the Cougars' BCS hopes and an outright Mountain West Conference championship. But quarterback Brandon Doman and running back Luke Staley teamed up for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and defensive back Jernaro Gilford ended Utah's final drive with an interception in the Cougars' 24-21 win at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cougars trailed 21-10 in the fourth as Utah controlled BYU's offense for most of the game. But BYU drove 92 yards in 2:25 and scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Doman to Staley. A two-point conversion run by Staley made it 21-18. The at-times-porous BYU defense then held, giving the Cougars the ball with 2:11 to play. BYU took the lead on an option pitch from Doman to Staley, who ran 30 yards down the sideline for the game-winner.

Quotable

"We need to be smart in our preparation this week, and we will be. We will not go out and do a lot of hitting. We play best when we're fresh, and we have zero depth right now." — Utah coach Urban Meyer

Numbers to watch

6 — The number of losses BYU has at LaVell Edwards Stadium since finishing the 2001 season with a perfect home record.

548 — The number of yards Utah's offense produced against Wyoming last week in Rice-Eccles Stadium. BYU managed just 328 yards and 10 points against the Cowboys.

4 — Number of freshmen offensive linemen listed on both BYU's and Utah's two-deep charts.
