Trying to make his flamingo kite fly higher, Jim Platte runs along the mud flats of the Great Salt Lake on Saturday's windless morning. On weekends, Platte often meets with other Friends of Floyd, the pink flamingo that winters near Saltair. Together, they watch the big bird, but Platte goes a step further by flying his kite in hopes of making Floyd feel less lonely.
