The life of Mary Jane Butters:

1953 — Born in Ogden.

1974 — Completes carpentry school.

1976 — Becomes first female wilderness ranger in Uinta Wilderness Area in Utah.

1986 — Buys five-acre farm near Moscow, Idaho. Founds Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute.

1988 — Starts selling organic peppers, garlic and lettuce at farmer's market.

1989 — Creates dried falafel mix.

1993 — Issues private stock to grow her Paradise Farm Organics dried food product line.

1996 — Publishes first mail order catalog.

1997 — Creates Pay Dirt Farm School, in which students pay to live and work on farm.

1998 — Raises almost $1 million in another stock sale.

1999 — Introduces Web sites www.backcountryfood.org and www.maryjanesfarm.org. Farm sales reach nearly $500,000.

2001 — Creates MaryJanesFarm magazine.
