But even with the growing friendship, Bob remained on that pedestal. Time simply added more layers to my respect for him. In composition, I knew that the smallest detail would be scrutinized and put to task, and my organ pieces would have to meet the highest standards. Regardless of his musical demands, however, I always knew that Bob cared about me as a person. He was one of the most human, tender people I have known — a rare combination of unbending idealism coupled with incredible warmth and caring. He was always generous with his kindness, and I admired him for the way he treated his wife and everyone else around him.

As I look back, I think that's what I value most from my lessons with Bob. His accomplishments — which are many — are simply a crowning jewel to the spectacular human being that he is, and having someone as wonderful as Bob take the time to mentor me made all the difference in my world.

That treasured time has passed but the lessons stay with me. I can hardly remember anything that I taught him, but I can hardly forget anything that he taught me. I never sit down to write music without hearing bits and pieces of advice coming back to haunt me. Even when I write music reviews for the Deseret Morning News, I wonder — every now and again — if my teacher approves.

The funny thing is, that in those moments, I still have that same sense of awe, of warmth and utter and profound respect for my teacher and mentor.
