A fund-raising campaign to restore Salt Lake's Cathedral of the Madeleine has netted more than $3.3 million in leadership gifts to date, according to The Most Rev. William K. Weigand, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. The average gift for the project has exceeded $100,000. Estimated cost for the restoration is $5.3 million, with an additional $1 million required for the creation of an endowment to preserve the cathedral. The building was designated a state historical site in 1970 and a national historic monument in 1971.
