Leslie Norris, Brigham Young University professor of English and internationally renowned poet, will receive this year's Governor's Award in the Humanities on Saturday 7:30 p.m. at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. Broadway, followed by a dessert reception. He is being recognized for his contributions to public understanding and appreciation of the role of poetry in international culture.
Norris was born in Wales and enjoyed a teaching and writing career in the United Kingdom before joining the faculty of BYU in 1983 as a professor of creative writing. He is the author of 15 collections of poems, three short-story collections, essays and books for children and several critical introductions.
Friends of the Humanities Awards will also be presented to the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning, Lt. Gov. Olene Walker, Edwin Espinel and the City Library. Each is being cited for contributions to promotion of the love of literature and literacy.
The ceremony is free and open to the public.
