Lehi Council says boy can keep pony

LEHI — Dallin Hunsaker, a 6-year-old resident who suffers from cerebral palsy, will get to keep his pony after all, the Lehi City Council decided Tuesday night.

Council members unanimously voted to rezone the Hunsaker lot from residential to agricultural to allow Dallin's pony, Chick, to live on the two-acre property. The vote reverses last month's denial of the zoning change.

Before the vote, Dallin's father, Tim Hunsaker, told council members the pony provided therapy that is necessary for Dallin's well-being.

"I'm not talking about a 6-year-old spoiled boy who wants a horse. I'm talking about a difference in the quality of life," Tim Hunsaker said. "It's been said that parents bring love to a boy, but a community raises him. I'm asking you guys as fathers of our community to not discriminate."

Last month's 3-2 vote not to change the zoning was based on several concerns, including a disagreement with a neighbor. The Hunsakers were able to satisfy those concerns, and Tim Hunsaker presented a petition signed by all his neighbors.

Councilman James Dixon said a public hearing brought an outpouring of support for Dallin, which influenced Tuesday's vote.

Dallin's mother, DaraLynn Hunsaker, said she was excited and relieved by the council's decision.

"I can actually go home and rest and feel relieved," she said. "We have an awesome neighborhood that's in full support of us."

DaraLynn Hunsaker said watching Dallin ride the pony was "amazing."

"He has fun. It's what he does to relax," she said. "It takes him out of his everyday cycle into his own little world, and that's where he needs to be sometimes."
