CROSS COUNTRY: After placing second in the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday, the BYU men's cross country team moved up the polls seven points to become ranked No. 5 in the nation. The women's team — the two-time defending NCAA champions — remains ranked No. 1 in its Division I poll.

Paced by Kip Kangogo's first-place finish, BYU defeated a number of top teams, including No. 5 Oregon, No. 10 Eastern Michigan, No. 15 Providence, No. 23 Colorado State, No. 25 Minnesota and No. 26 Iowa.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Entering the second week of Mountain West Conference play, BYU embarks on a road trip to play at New Mexico Thursday and at Air Force Friday in a pair of 7 p.m. matches.

Listed as the No. 29 team with 21 votes in the most recent USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Poll, the Cougars (10-4 overall, 1-1 MWC) will first face the Lobos (3-11, 0-1), who are in the midst of an eight-match losing streak.

BYU will conclude the trip by taking on the Falcons (10-4, 1-0) the following night. In its MWC opener last week, Air Force dismantled New Mexico with an easy sweep. With 10 wins on the season, the Falcons have matched their win total from the past two years combined.

Offensively, the Cougars have been led this season by the trio of Carrie Bowers (3.08 kills per game), Kim Wilson (4.02 kpg) and April Varner (3.57 kpg).

As a team, on the national scale, BYU is a top-25 blocking team. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Lindsy Lewis-Hartsock continues to lead the Cougar blocking brigade and is among the top 25 blockers in the nation with an average of 1.42 blocks per game.

MEN'S GOLF: BYU's No. 17-ranked golf team finished among the top five teams for the second consecutive tournament this fall, tying for fourth at the Husky Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cougars, who led after the first round, slipped to a tie for fourth with Washington State on the final day. The Washington Huskies defended their home turf with a 21-stroke victory while San Diego State finished second. No. 3-ranked UCLA was third finishing six shots better than BYU and Washington State. California, ranked fourth in the latest Golfweek standings, was sixth. The tournament featured six-man teams with the top five scores counting toward the team total.

Junior Todd Miller earned his first top-10 finish since returning from an LDS mission. His fourth-place finish ties his career best, as he went 73-72-72—217.
