Utah Department of Transportation employee Robert Dowell has been honored with the 2003 Alfred E. Johnson Achievement Award by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
The award recognizes professionals in middle management who have made an outstanding contribution to their department in engineering or management.
Dowell, who began working for UDOT in 1993, is the Richfield district engineer and previously served as a senior project manager and an environmental engineer. He also has worked in roadway design and hydraulics.
"As an engineer and as a leader, Robert is an invaluable asset not only to the Department of Transportation, but also to the citizens of the state of Utah," said UDOT executive director and AASHTO president John Njord.
Dowell holds a master's degree in civil engineering from Brigham Young University and is a licensed professional engineer.
UDOT projects that have benefitted from Dowell's involvement include the St. George Boulevard reconstruction, the Zion National Park shuttle system, the Southern Corridor environmental impact statement and the Hurricane Arch bridge.
