Carol Wincenc, one of today's premiere flutists, will be in recital Saturday in the Madsen Recital Hall at Brigham Young University at 7:30 p.m.

An internationally renowned artist, Wincenc has been a tireless champion of new music and passionately committed to expanding her instrument's repertoire. Many composers have written works for her, including Christopher Rouse, whose flute concerto Wincenc and the Houston Symphony under Christoph Eschenbach have recently recorded for Telarc.

Wincenc gave the world premiere performance of Henryk Gorecki's "Concerto-Cantata" with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam and later the U.S. premiere with the Chicago Symphony. She has also given over 50 performances of Lukas Foss' "Renaissance Concerto" and has commissioned works by Peter Schickele, Joan Tower, Paul Schoenfield and Tobias Picker. Picker's work, "The Rain in the Trees," is a double concerto for Wincenc and soprano Barbara Hendricks inspired by the poetry of W.S. Merwin.

Despite her endeavors on behalf of new music, Wincenc has never neglected the standard repertoire. She regularly plays the music of Bach, Mozart and Nielsen. Wincenc has appeared with the orchestras in Saint Louis, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Los Angeles and Saint Paul. She is also in demand as a collaborator in chamber music and has performed with the Guarneri, Emerson, Tokyo and Cleveland String Quartets.

Wincenc has recorded several CDs, including an all-American album featuring the music of Foss and David Del Tredici. Upcoming recordings include Schoenfield's "Slovakian Songs" for flute and piano, accompanied by the composer, and a collection of 20th century chamber works by composers ranging from Samuel Barber to Heitor Villa-Lobos and featuring her husband, baritone Douglas Webster, and the Muir String Quartet.

For her recital Saturday, which is presented in collaboration with the Utah Flute Association, Wincenc will play music by Bach, Debussy, Poulenc, Enescu, Vardse, Foss, Tower, Schoenfield and Roberto Sierra. She will be accompanied by Salt Lake pianist Jed Moss.
