RIOT IN PERU: Soccer fans surged on the field and chased and beat players after a disputed call, leaving 20 people wounded, including 13 players and two referees, police said Thursday.

GOLF SALE OK'D: Callaway Golf Co., the world's largest golf club maker, won federal bankruptcy court approval Thursday to buy Top-Flite Golf Co., one of the nation's oldest and largest golf ball makers. The $174.4 million sale is expected to be completed this month, Callaway officials said.

Basketball

VAUGHN RETURNS: Point guard Jacque Vaughn returned to Atlanta on Thursday, signing with the Hawks after playing last season in Orlando.

ELIE JOINS SPURS: Former San Antonio Spurs player Mario Elie was hired as an assistant coach Thursday by the NBA champions. He replaces Mike Brown, who became the top assistant at Indiana.

HEAT SIGN ALSTON: Free agent Rafer Alston signed with the Miami Heat on Thursday, giving coach Pat Riley the point guard he had been looking for after signing Lamar Odom last week.

Baseball

ANALYST SUSPENDED: Angels television analyst Rex Hudler was suspended indefinitely by the team Thursday after his airport arrest last weekend for investigation of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He violated company policy and will be replaced during upcoming telecasts by Jose Mota of the club's Spanish radio team, the team said.

GENDER EQUITY SUIT: A group sued West Chester University on behalf of the recently dismantled women's gymnastics team Thursday, contending the school violated the law requiring gender equity in college sports. The university decided in April to cut women's gymnastics and men's lacrosse because of budget concerns.

Hockey

RICHTER RETIRES: Nearly 10 months after he played his last game, New York Rangers goaltender Mike Richter retired Thursday.

Richter, who will be 37 this month, spent 14 seasons with the Rangers, helping the team win its first Stanley Cup in 54 years in 1994.
