SEPT. 12

AMERICAN SPLENDOR — This drama, winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Feature from this year's Sundance Film Festival, stars character actor Paul Giamatti as highly iconoclastic comic book writer Harvey Pekar.

THE BOOK OF MORMON MOVIE, VOL. 1: THE JOURNEY — The first part of director Gary Rogers' ambitious live-action series covers the first two books of Nephi. Noah Danby stars as Nephi, while Jacque Gray ("God's Army") co-stars as his wife.

CABIN FEVER — Already receiving some comparisons to the "Evil Dead" cult films, this gory horror movie follows a group of unfortunate college students who are trapped in the woods and who have been infected with a flesh-eating virus.

COLD CREEK MANOR — Director Mike Figgis' dramatic thriller (with horror overtones) stars Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone as a couple that buys a country home, only to discover the awful secrets of the former occupants.

MATCHSTICK MEN — One of the title characters of this comedy-drama is a con man (Nicolas Cage) who is about to pull off a big score when his teenage daughter (Alison Lohman) suddenly shows up. Directed by Ridley Scott.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO — This sequel of sorts to 1995's "Desperado" finds Antonio Banderas' mariachi character seeking revenge on a corrupt federal agent (Johnny Depp). Salma Hayek co-stars.

SLAP HER . . . SHE'S FRENCH — Long-delayed comedy about a high school cheerleader (Jane McGregor) whose boyfriend and popularity are "stolen" by a foreign-exchange student (Piper Perabo).

STEP INTO LIQUID — This feature-length documentary about the changing face of surfing can be considered a sequel to 1966's "Endless Summer." Included are interviews with board athletes Taj Burrow, Dave Kalama and others.

SEPT. 19

ANYTHING ELSE — Woody Allen's latest is a romantic comedy starring Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci as a young couple whose insecurities keep tearing them apart. Allen heads up the supporting cast.

THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS — Musical-comedy starring Cuba Gooding Jr. as a man who must put a gospel choir together if he's going to collect his inheritance. Beyonce Knowles and Steve Harvey co-star.
