After missing only two starts in 13 years in the big leagues, Detroit right-hander Jack Morris is on the disabled list, a first for the winningest pitcher of the 1980s.
The injury that landed Morris on the 21-day disabled list Thursday involves the support structure of the inner side of the right elbow, said a Tiger team physician. The injury is associated with a small fracture that appears to be several weeks old, Collon said. While Morris will practice and travel with the team, the doctor said the 34-year-old won't be allowed to throw for two weeks.
"You don't want to lose Jack any time," outfielder Chet Lemon said. "Give me a man who wants the ball and he'll go out there and win his share, like Jack has."
"It's going to affect us, obviously," Detroit interim manager Dick Tracewski said. "He's our best. The record (this season) doesn't show it, but he's been pitching well. He's our No. 1 guy."
Right-hander Randy Nosek, 22, who had a 3-1 record and 3.10 ERA in seven Class AA games for the Tigers' London, Ontario, farm club, was called up to replace Morris. Nosek will make his major league debut Saturday in Kansas City.
Morris, who has earned 158 of his 179 victories in this decade, has struggled all season. He lost his first six decisions and is 2-7 with a 4.94 ERA. He was shelled for four home runs in a 7-3 loss to Cleveland in his last start, Monday night.
