A Layton boy who suffered a head wound when his rifle accidentally discharged Tuesday night remained in very critical condition Thursday in Ogden's St. Benedict's Hospital, authorities said.
Jason H. Lewis, 12, was hospitalized in intensive care after the accident at a South Ogden firing range operated by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.South Ogden Police Lt. Val Shupe said Lewis and another 12-year-old boy were en route to a gun safety class when Lewis stumbled or slipped. The butt of his .22-caliber rifle struck the ground and the weapon fired a bullet into the boy's head just above his left eye.
DWR spokesman Bruce Anderson said the boys were bringing their guns for their final examination and shooting test in the course.
