A fire Tuesday afternoon caused about $25,000 damage to a central Salt Lake duplex. The blaze began in the garage east of a duplex at 436 E. Van Ness Place (850 South) and spread to the duplex, burning one room and much of the attic, said Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Jim Kleine. Chris Hansen, who lives on the west side of the duplex, escaped unharmed. "I heard this girl pounding on the door. Then she yelled, `Fire!' and I got out. I guess I'm lucky to be alive." The fire, which was under control in 15 minutes, destroyed the garage and Hansen's car. Kleine said the cause of the fire is unknown.
