Utah college and university students will conduct exit polls Tuesday in 13 counties, interviewing voters to get an early indication of election night winners.

The poll, which will involve students from seven colleges and universities, was initiated by David Magleby, a Brigham Young University political science professor, and has become a popular feature of Utah elections.Nearly 400 students with questionnaires in hand will arrive at the polls at 7 a.m., from Cache County in the north to Washington County in the south. They will interview voters until the polls close Tuesday night.

Throughout the day, they will telephone data to a control center at BYU staffed by more students, who will enter and analyze the information under the direction of Howard B. Christensen, BYU professor of statistics.

Students and faculty members will report their findings on a special election-night broadcast produced by KBYU-TV.
