The Provo School Board approved the purchase of property Tuesday near Paul Ream Wilderness Park on which to build a new alternative high school.

Consultant Rick Smith told the board that the majority of the 9.5 acres is an upland area, meaning it can be built on. The board was concerned that the property might be in a wetlands area. The district will pay Marilyn O. Chapman $150,000 for the lands. It hopes to begin construction of a new $3.4 million Independence High School in the next two months. The district will bond for the money.
