Leftist protesters burned an American flag and shouted anti-American slogans in front of the U.S. Embassy Friday to demand the government refuse to negotiate a new treaty on the U.S. installations in the Philippines.

Protesters, representing several labor and student groups, carried banners reading "No to U.S. Bases" and "U.S. Imperialism - Cause of Poverty."Police estimated the crowd at 1,000. But reporters said the numbers dwindled in half as rain fell. The group dispersed without incident at the end of the protest.
