NL UMP PALLONE RESIGNS

Umpire Dave Pallone, who fueded with players and managers and joined the National League in 1979 during the umpires' strike, resigned Monday, reportedly under pressure.

Pallone, perhaps best known for his April 30 incident with Cincinnati Manager Pete Rose that resulted in Rose's 30-day suspension, was told by NL officials he could resign now or be fired at the end of the season, sources close to the situation said.Locally . . .
