Theater group may find new home in South Salt Lake

SOUTH SALT LAKE (AP) — Once its holiday productions are over, a Salt Lake City community theater will have to find a new home.

But the Academy of Performing Arts — a 13-year-old nonprofit — may find a temporary home in South Salt Lake.

Developer Steve Aste is offering the academy some warehouse space at a reduced lease rate. The academy would have to raise money to build a theater inside.

The warehouse is scheduled to be torn down in about two years for a new development. But Aste says he's willing to build a permanent theater nearby if the academy shows it will have enough money to pay for a long-term lease.

Meanwhile, the troupe is focused on another project: staging "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" at Salt Lake City's Sorenson Unity Center.
