Obituary: Andrew O. McArthur

Andrew O. McArthur 12/23/13 ~ 10/9/05 Our loving father, Andrew O. McArthur passed away October 9, 2005 at the age of 91 at his home in St. George, Utah surrounded by his family. Andrew was born December 23, 1913 in St. George, Utah to James and Elizabeth Oxborrow McArthur. Andrew lived in St. George his entire life. He attended Dixie High School and Dixie College. He served an LDS mission in the North Western States. Upon completion of his mission, he returned home and went to work with his father at the family owned Quality Bakery. He became a master Baker, continuing the business after his Father's death until 1960. He married Merle Wallace on her birthday, September 29, 1938 in St. George LDS Temple. They enjoyed 66 years together. Andrew's sweetheart Merle preceded him in death on December 30, 2004. Andrew was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions including Bishop, Stake President, Counselor in the St. George Temple Presidency and Regional Representative for the Southern Utah Area. He was a charter member of the St. George Volunteer Fire Department and served for over 65 years. Andrew was a member of Rotary International. He served on the Board of Zions Bank and the St. George Savings and Loan. His life was marked by industry, thrift, hard work and self reliance. He is survived by his children: Marilyn Smith (Paul) Murray, Utah; James A. (Denise) St. George; Daniel C. (Julie) St. George. He has 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grand-children. He is also survived by his 93 year old sister Ina Mae Bracken of St. George. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Merle Sarah, his sisters and brothers; Clio Sullivan, Bessie (Wayne) Gardner, Mary McArthur, Joseph (Gertrude) McArthur, Lavera Pelt, and James (infant) McArthur. Andrew enjoyed life and lived each day to its fullest. He was a hard worker, dedicated to accomplishing the tasks before him. If you wanted it done you could count on Andy or "Bish" as he was known. He enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, kissing his grandkids and being with his family. As a young man in school, he played tennis, softball and basketball (his favorite). Funeral services will be held October 17, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the St. George LDS 8th Ward Chapel, 166 South Main Street, St. George, Utah. Visitation will be held on Sunday October 16, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, and October 17, 2005 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the 8th Ward Chapel. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary (435) 673-4221.
