1924 ~ 2004

Melvin Hunsaker Hansen returned home to his loving Heavenly Father July 20,2004. He was greeted by his beloved sweetheart of 60 years, LaWana Waite Hansen.

Melvin was born to James Christian Hansen and Aleen Hunsaker October 17, 1924, in Moore, Idaho. Melvin and LaWana were married October 13, 1944 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they raised six children that love them both dearly. Their posterity continues to grow with 31 grandchildren, and 33 plus great-grandchildren, (yes and still counting).

After years of physical labor Mom and Dad were called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the England Leeds Mission. His calloused hands worn by hard work and dedication in his early years were later worn soft by his grandchildren's laughter and tears.

Thankfully Grandpa allowed us to serve him in return and callous our own hands in ways only he and the Lord will know. Grandpa's eyes could be felt as much as his voice was heard as he watched with admiration the accomplishments of his grandchildren-and he always let them know the roots of their skills and good looks. As the years wore on our Dad and Grandpa traded his toupee and brown coveralls for a razor and a pair of Dockers.

With a hearty burger and Diet Coke, Grandpa was easy to please. But with that chain hooked on his pants, untouchable were the car keys. Whenever the grandchildren got in trouble with Grandma, it was because Grandpa wanted us to sneak him treats that his diet didn't allow. His body finally wore out and we rejoice in the fact that he has been reunited with many loved ones. However, we will miss our beloved dad, grandpa, and brother.

Surviving are his sisters, Lenore Brown, Elaine Wilde, and Donna Hansen; his children, Maraleen Dice, Steven and Linda Hansen, Gay and Mike Hauenstein, Gary and Jennis Hansen, Ralene and Tim Overall, Denece and Bryan Johnson.

We express our gratitude for the loving care of Guardian Hospice nurses, and many caregivers that shared their love with Dad.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday July26, 2004 in the Syracuse Seventh Ward LDS Chapel, 1625 South 1100 West, Syracuse, UT. A viewing will be held at the church Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and Monday 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Interment will follow at Aultorest Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Leavitt's Mortuary, Ogden, UT.
