2007 homicides — The victims, their stories and their killers

1. ST. GEORGE, Jan. 10 — Keely Amber Hall, 15, was strangled to death and her body dumped in a neighborhood park. A 14-year-old boy was charged with first-degree murder, rape and aggravated sexual assault. Carlos Hernandez, now 15, was certified in December to stand trial as an adult. Shortly after, he pleaded guilty to rape and murder in exchange for a charge of aggravated sexual assault being dropped. He was sentenced to serve 15 years to life in prison for the murder and five years to life for the rape.

2. WEST VALLEY CITY, Jan. 10 — Tri Xuan Phan, 36, was found beaten to death inside the pool hall he owned, Vui Vui Billiards, 1839 W. 3500 South. Investigators have no suspects and have not revealed a possible motive for the slaying.

3. ST. GEORGE, Jan. 13 — Mark Batin, 27, was shot and killed in a remote part of Washington County known as "Utah Hill" along the Utah-Arizona border. Edgar Ghermon Navarro-Moreno, 25, was charged with first-degree felony murder. Three others were charged with obstruction of justice for trying to cover up the crime. His next court appearance is Jan. 8.

4. SAN JUAN COUNTY, Jan. 15 — Yuki Yoshida died when the vehicle she was riding in plummeted off a cliff outside Monument Valley. The vehicle was driven by Yu-Shung Lin. Investigators later determined Lin purposely drove the vehicle off the cliff in a murder-suicide.

5. MURRAY, Jan 18. — The skeletal remains of Steven D. Gransee Jr., 28, were found frozen in thick ice just off the Jordan Parkway. It wasn't until June, however, that police determined through an autopsy from the Utah state medical examiner that Gransee's death was the result of homicide. It appeared as though Gransee had been shot in the chest. Investigators have no suspects or motive in the case.

6. SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 23 — Lisa Pouha, 40, was stabbed multiple times in the chest outside her apartment near the corner of 850 South and 1400 West just before 1:30 a.m. Her husband, 38-year-old Sione Talanoa, was found several blocks away and arrested. He was charged with first-degree felony murder. Police believe the couple had been arguing about Talanoa's alleged extramarital affair just before the stabbing. Talanoa pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
