Herman Victor Nichols, 86, died February 17, 2008 in Holladay, Utah, of natural causes.He was born May 13, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Gus Nichols and Sina Sather Nichols. A graduate of West High School and a World War II Veteran. He served with the Army Military Police at Fort Douglas, Utah and Florence, Arizona prisoner of war camp.

On June 5, 1946, he married Fae Richey in the Idaho Falls Temple. He was an active, dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings, including the Cub Scouts, Seventies and High Priests Quorums. He served as a missionary with his wife in the Virginia Roanoak and Wells Stake (Temple View Branch) missions.

He worked as a dishwasher and helper in his father's cafes as a child, then went to work at Franklin Market and Walgreen Drug. After being released from the Army, he worked for defense industries, drove Yellow Cab, worked at Kennecott Copper and was hired in by the U.S. Postal Service in 1960. He was a letter carrier and spent much of his career at the Sugarhouse Station and had a route near Nibley Park. After his retirement (1982) he was a crossing guard for 17 years with Salt Lake and South Salt Lake cities. Dad also worked many part-time jobs in the evening to support his family.

He enjoyed traveling and reading maps. He genuinely loved people, never forgot a face or name, and enjoyed telling stories. He was a talented artist and gave most of his drawings and paintings to friends and family. He was born on Friday the 13th and lived the life of a lucky man.

Preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother George, sisters Irene Burling and Ethel Simpson, and an infant son, Bruce R Nichols. Survived by his brothers, Nick (Donna) and Deno, three sons: Craig R. (Aleath), Scott V (Patte) and David H (Tina), seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at Belvedere Ward, 607 E. Downington Ave. (1820 S.), Salt Lake City at 11 a.m. A public viewing will be held at the same site on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and from 10:00-10:50 a.m. on Sat. preceding the funeral.
