Sherrill Preston Shurtleff, 95, died Sunday, February 3, 2008, in Orem. He was born October 20, 1912, in Logan, Utah, to Arnold Riley and Ruth Richardson Shurtleff. He was the fourth of nine children.
The family lived in Salt Lake City; Alameda, California, where Sherrill went to school; and eventually Oakland, California, where he met Gladys Daybell of Garfield, Utah, who was visiting her sister. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 29, 1938 and had 3 children whom they raised in Oakland. Gladys died in 1984 and in 1985 Sherrill married Blanche Phipps. She died in 2003. Sherrill spent his remaining years in Orem, Utah.
Sherrill held numerous positions in scouting in his Oakland LDS ward as well as the district. He was also a stake missionary and a worker in the Oakland Temple. At the time of his marriage Sherrill worked for UPS. He later worked at Moore's shipyard, then the Oakland Airport aiding the war effort during WWII. After training as an electrician he spent over 20 years at the Lawrence Laboratory in Livermore, California, until he retired.
He is survived by his three children: Philip Sherrill (Elaine) of Orem; Allan Ray (Jan) of Castro Valley, California; and Sharilyn Gladys (Kay) Watson, of Provo, as well as younger brother, Chet, of Yuma, Arizona; and 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, seven siblings, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Saturday February 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Grandview Third Ward chapel, 960 W. 2150 N. ( East of State St. off Carterville Rd. at 2150 N.), Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Ogden City Cemetery. Condolences can be sent online at serenicare.com
