JACE TAVITA, Brighton, boys basketball: The Bengals posted a 3-0 record at the Oil Men's Shootout in New Mexico during the Christmas break, and the play of this senior guard is a big reason why.

In the tournament's first game against Central, Ariz., the University of Utah-bound Tavita tallied 12 points. The next day he recorded 11 points against Trevor Browne, Ariz., and in the final day of the tourney he netted 12 points against Basha, Ariz.

After starting at Brighton his freshman and sophomore years, he spent his junior year at a North Carolina prep school to sharpen his grades.

The 6-foot-4 guard is back for his senior year and averaging 14.4 ppg.

COLLETTE CRYSTAL, Alta, girls basketball: This senior point guard leads her team both statistically and emotionally.

"She's our leading scorer, our point guard, and our all-around leader," said Hawks head coach Kristi Horrocks. "She does it all. We're good, but we're so much better with her. She ties all the threads together."

The honors student leads her teammates by example and finds ways to inspire the best in them.

"We got down against Freemont, but she just kept everybody calm," Horrocks said. "She just takes over in every way, and she got everybody back in the game."
