Betty Lou Decker Burton passed away on September 18, 2007, in Salt Lake City in the arms of her two sons. Life was rich and full for this remarkable woman of accomplishment and faith; and death marked the beginning of the much anticipated reunion with her beloved husband Art, daughter Karen, parents and cherished friends.Born April 28, 1923, to James Loa Decker and Louisa Lees Decker. Even at a young age, Betty Lou was a vigorous tennis player and loved to ski. She attended East High School, serving as Student Body Secretary, and later attended the University of Utah, affiliating with Chi Omega sorority.

Betty Lou married Dr. Arthur McFarland Burton September 10, 1946, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had three children, Karen Burton Miner (Paul), Scott Decker Burton (Lynn) and Richard Arthur Burton (Emmy). Betty Lou and Art's life together was significantly altered by an injury Art sustained resulting in his 31 year hospitalization and ultimate passing in 1993.

Prompted by love and determination, Betty Lou refused to leave Arthur's side and became the sole provider for her family while continuing to lovingly care for her sweetheart. Upon Art's incapacity, Betty Lou immediately sought and obtained employment at the University of Utah where she served with distinction for 27 years as the Administrative Assistant to the Academic Vice President. To this day, many of her colleagues name Betty Lou as one who "really ran the Park Building." Throughout all this, her little family felt no hardship and knew that their mother adored them and their father. Betty Lou's friends were ever present in love and support, for which she and her family are indebted.

Betty Lou was an active member of numerous civic and social institutions. She was bright, engaging and friendly with all. People were naturally drawn to her. She refused to take herself too seriously and possessed a delightful sense of humor, which continued until her passing. Betty Lou served in many callings and leadership positions in the church, including most recently several church service missions at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

She is survived by her two sons, 11 grandchildren, six great-grand children and her brother Jay Loa Decker (Dawna); and was preceded in death by her husband, daughter and parents.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 24, 2007, 12 noon, Federal Heights Ward Chapel, 1300 E. Fairfax Rd. (at Virginia St.). Friends may call at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and at the Ward Monday, 10:30-11:40 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
