The field of candidates for Salt Lake police chief has been narrowed to three or four, said Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis, who expects to make a final decision in about a week.

A nine-member citizens panel last week pared down a list of 21 applicants to eight, who this week were interviewed by the panel. The panel, made up of attorneys, religious leaders and others, briefed DePaulis Thursday.DePaulis said "three or four" candidates, two of whom were "very good" applicants, were recommended to him by the panel Thursday.

The new chief will replace retired Chief Bud Willoughby, who stepped down because of health problems. Acting Chief Ed Johnson has been serving in Willoughby's capacity since his departure in May.

City officials were unwilling to reveal the names on the final short list, saying some applicants have requested confidentiality.
