Utah Highway Patrol Col. Mike Chabries was expected to be named the new Salt Lake police chief, sources confirmed Wednesday.
Chabries, an 18-year veteran of the highway patrol, will replace E.L. "Bud" Willoughby, who retired in May because of health problems.Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis was expected to announce his decision Wednesday afternoon at a press conference.
The Deseret News confirmed, through sources at City Hall and the Department of Public Safety, that Chabries will be the new chief.
Chabries was one of four finalists selected by a nine-member citizens committee appointed by DePaulis. The other candidates were acting Chief Ed Johnson; Terry Knowles, former agent-in-charge of the Salt Lake FBI office and currently head of the FBI's Sacramento office; and Jay Carey, Newport News police chief, Newport, Va.
