Obituary: W. Keith Mitchell

W. Keith Mitchell, 74, passed away November 6, 2003 in Salt Lake City.

He was born February 19, 1929 in Clinton, Utah to Joseph Albert and Lavon Mitchell. Keith attended Davis High School, graduating in 1947. He then attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. He married Delores Blood in 1947. She preceded him in death. Married Juanita N. Bennett on June 28, 1991.

Keith was active in the community, serving in many organizations. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern Utah United Fund, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Weber College Theater Advisory Board, the Salt Lake City Exchange Club and Kiwanis Club, the Provo Chamber of Commerce and the Ogden and Provo Rotary Clubs. He served also served as a Chairman of the Greater Ogden Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants, Chairman of the Weber Basin Comprehensive Health Planning Council, Head of the Commercial Division of the United Fund Campaign, President of the Ogden Retail Merchants Mall Association, President of the Valley Fair Mall Merchants Association, President of Salt Lake Retail Merchants Assoc., Chairman of the Board of the West Valley Chamber of Commerce, and director of the Utah Opera Company.

Keith began working for J.C. Penney Co. in Ogden, in1947, in sales and as Department Manager and Assistant Store Manager. He joined Z.C.M.I. Department Store in 1959, working first as a buyer, traveling to various markets of the world, selecting merchandise to be sold. He then supervised the construction of the Ogden, Valley Fair, and University Mall stores, and served as Store Manager of all three. Keith also worked as Vice-President of Stores, supervising the operation of eight stores and Store Manager of the downtown Salt Lake City store. After 38 years of retailing, he retired from Z.C.M.I. in 1985. Keith enjoyed golf, photography, reading, traveling, listening to classical music and skiing. He was an avid skier, skiing most of the major ski resorts in Austria, Germany and the United States. He also taught many people to ski.

Survived by his seven children: Stanford K. (Julie) Mitchell, Salt Lake City; Gregory B. (Marsha) Mitchell, Salt Lake; Julie Mitchell (Calvin) Tanner, Salt Lake; Susan Mitchell (Tory) Richardson, Draper, Michelle Mitchell (Mike) Radivoyevich, Salt Lake; Cameron (Marna) Mitchell, Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, and Melissa Mitchell (Jason) Crowley, Boise, Id: 15 grandchildren; and two great-grand children. Preceded in death his parents, Joseph Albert and LaVon Davis Mitchell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 2350 E. 1300 So., where friends may call Friday 6-8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to the service. Interment Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, Ogden, Utah.
