Zion National Park fire moving southeast
ZION NATIONAL PARK — A fire caused by lightning July 7 has burned an estimated 139 acres in the northern reaches of Zion National Park.
As of Saturday morning, the fire was about 25 percent contained, but it was moving southeast and still showing "moderate" activity, park officials said. The fire is being managed by Zion Fire and Resource Management personnel, who are allowing it to burn for resource benefits to the area.
A crew of 20 firefighters is attempting to keep the fire burning east of the West Rim Trail so it can continue to burn naturally.
The fire is located about two miles from Lava Point. The West Rim Trail from Lava Point to Potato Hollow has been temporarily closed as a result.
