Utah's top 10: For little or no cost, Utahns can enjoy wealth of recreation
Along the way there are the towns of Tropic, Cannonville, Henrieville, Escalante and Boulder, complete with quaint farming communities with small stores and down-home restaurants and not a single stoplight among them. There are streams and lakes, hiking and biking paths, and attractions focusing on ancient times and the Old West.
Another popular drive is over the Mirror Lake Highways between Kamas and Evanston, Wyo.
One closer to the heart of the state's population is the Provo Canyon drive between Heber and Provo.
A popular backway drive is actually a Y drive connecting Park City, Brighton and Midway.
As noted, there is a long list of driving opportunities, each in a different part of the state and each showing off a different assets.
National forests and national parks
As noted, there are five national parks, seven national monuments, two national recreation areas, one national historical site and six national forests.
The two most popular national sites in Utah are Zion National Park and Glen Canyon/Lake Powell Recreation Area. Fees for the national parks range from $6 to $25 per vehicle, or $3 to $12 per person.
Summer is a great time to tour one of the national forests. The temperatures are cooler, the vegetation greener and recreational activities more abundant.
The closest forests to most people would be Wasatch-Cache, Ashley and Uinta.
Within the forests are camping areas, complete with tables and, in some cases, water.
The question is: Where to start?
The answer is with one of the Web sits created by the state, DPR, DWR and ski areas.
