Children may also grow dependent on floaties to feel comfortable in the water, making learning to swim less of a necessity.

"They teach bad habits. Kids need to learn water safety," Lance Walker said.

Deciding whether to enroll your swimmer in private or public class depends on the individual.

Private lessons allow for the student to have one-on-one time with the instructor and time to focus on specific areas that may require additional attention.

Public lessons are typically more affordable and cover the basics to provide the swimmer with a solid safety base to build upon.

Adult classes for ages 19 and older are offered in the mornings during the spring months of March, April and May at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex.

Private lessons for adults can be arranged through independent swim instructors.

"Most adults see kids in the water and then see they can do it themselves," Lance Walker said.

More information on private lessons offered year-round for ages 6 months to adult is available at swimkids.biz.
