Albania: Election winner
TIRANA — Early exit polls are indicating that Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha's Democratic Party has won another term in office in parliamentary elections Sunday.
Three exit polls — conducted by Kosovo-based Gani Bobi, American Zogby International and Italy's IPR Marketing — give Berisha the edge in forming a government. Official results are expected Monday.
According to Gani Bobi, Berisha's right-wing party won 47.5 percent of the vote, with his Socialist rival, Edi Rama, trailing with 38.8 percent and former Prime Minister Ilir Meta winning 6.5 percent.
Argentina: Election woes
BUENOS AIRES — Argentina's first couple fought for its survival Sunday in congressional elections that could undermine the president's power and seal the fate of one of the country's biggest political dynasties.
Allies of President Cristina Fernandez and her husband and predecessor Nestor Kirchner have controlled the Congress for six years, but analysts expected them to lose two dozen seats in both chambers, eroding their absolute majorities and damaging their brand as their Peronist party seeks direction ahead of 2011's presidential race.
Guinea-Bissau: Election
BISSAU — The unsolved murder of this country's democratically elected president cast a long shadow over Guinea-Bissau as only small numbers of voters headed to the polls Sunday to choose their next leader.
At polling stations in the capital, there were no lines. The few voters who came walked away almost immediately, their pinkies dabbed in ink.
President Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira was killed March 2 in front of his wife by men wearing army uniforms.
India: Gays march
NEW DELHI — Hundreds of gay rights supporters waved flags and danced past traffic during marches through three Indian cities Sunday to celebrate gay pride and call for the decriminalization of homosexuality in this deeply conservative country.
The New Delhi parade passed near the Delhi High Court, which is reviewing a law that prohibits gay sex — and can punish it with up to 10 years in prison.
Sex between people of the same gender has been illegal in India since a British colonial era law included it as a forbidden sexual act "against the order of nature."
