Third District Judge Vernice Trease has set a July 13-16 jury trial for Bernard Fred Rigby, 64, who is charged with the 1990 shooting death of Gary Feltch.

Retired Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Steve Cook, a longtime friend of Rigby's, testified in 2007 that Rigby twice confided to him during informal conversations that he had killed Felch. Rigby believed Felch was a rival for the affections of Rigby's girlfriend.

Cook admitted he kept the confessions secret and lied to police because he felt his friend, whose health was poor, had gone through enough suffering. However, Cook took the witness stand two years ago because the time had arrived "when the truth has to come out."

Cook also said Rigby later denied he had anything to do with Felch's death.
