You probably saw the story about Tom Glavine and how he was unceremoniously released by the Braves after a sterling career that included more than 300 victories and two Cy Young awards. You probably didn't know that Utah native Braeden Schlehuber was the catcher who caught what might be Glavine's last game ever, in a rehab assignment game for the Class A Rome (Ga.) Braves last week. Schlehuber starred at Viewmont High School in three sports . . .
Glad to see RSL owner Dave Checketts gave Jason Kreis a vote of confidence the other day. Too often sports owners fire coaches on a whim, because they're upset about one bad defeat or a long losing streak. Kreis did a good job last year and got the team off to a pretty good start this year. Even though his team hasn't won for about six weeks, I say give Kreis a chance. Of course, if RSL doesn't win another game the rest of the year, then, uh, it might be time for a change . . .
Since we haven't had a Triple Crown winner in horse racing for more than 30 years, it would have been fun to see the first-ever Triple Crown jockey winner on different horses in Calvin Borel. However, I knew Borel had no chance when he said he had the best horse and practically guaranteed victory . . .
Finally, I think we can definitely say Tiger Woods is back after the way he won the Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon, making birdies on the final two holes for a final-round 65 and a one-shot win over Jim Furyk. There should be little doubt that Tiger can, and probably will, successfully defend his U.S. Open crown next week in New York.
