Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has appointed Amanda Smith as the executive director of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.

The position has been unfilled since Rick Sprott retired from the position in December. Smith's appointment is subject to Senate confirmation.

After a national search, Huntsman selected Smith last week, advising the Senate of the appointment. Smith is the legislative-affairs director for Huntsman.

"This department is critical to maintaining our state's quality of life," Huntsman said. "Amanda has been a dedicated public servant, focused on maintaining and improving the only true legacy we have — our land, air and water. I am grateful for her willingness to serve in this important capacity."

Smith received her bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and earned her law degree from Gonzaga University. She previously worked as the government-relations director for The Nature Conservancy. In her role in the governor's office, she has worked on critical issues such as energy development, rural affairs, water and public lands.

"I am honored that the governor has the confidence in me to lead our state's efforts in protecting our environment," Smith said. "I look forward to working with the strong team of experts at the Department of Environmental Quality."
